WHY IS MODI GOVT INITIATING A FRESH ‘TRIPLE TALAQ’ BILL IN LOK SABHA TODAY?

The central government has ordered all its MPs to be present in the Lok Sabha today has the BJP government is introducing a fresh triple talaq bill. The bill is being introduced today as the Modi government has passed an ordinance in this regard in September.

According to the country law, an ordinance is considered valid only for six months. But if the Parliament session is going on, then the ordinance needs to be replaced within 42 days, counting from the day the session has begun. If by any reason it does not happen then the ordinance lapses.

The current ongoing Parliament Winter Session had begun on December 11. However, the government has a right to re-promulgate the ordinance in case bill fails to get through the Parliament.

Although the Modi government had previously introduced a bill on triple talaq in Parliament, it got a green signal by the Lok Sabha, but is still pending in the Rajya Sabha, as the NDA does not have much majority here. PM Modi said, “We are committed so that Muslim women can get rid of a big life threat. Not just that, in order for Muslim women to go to Haj (pilgrimage), we have removed the clause that men need to accompany them.” According to the sources, to date, nearly 430 incidents of triple talaq have been noticed by the government via media.
