The ruling coalition party in Bangladesh, which is led by Sheikh Hasina a won a landslide victory for another consecutive term. This is a political victory in the history of Bangladesh as till date no other leader in the country had won for a third term consecutively. The ruling party has won nearly 80 percent of votes. This makes the government the strongest in entire South Asia.
However, the opposition party Jatiya Oikya Front is very confident that anti-incumbency would catch up with Hasina and this will lead to the release of former politician Zia from the prison. The BNP’s decision to allow tickets to former Jamaat-e-Islami leaders also didn’t work effectively.
For India, Sheikh Hasina’s win is a very comfortable step as the relationship with her party in the last decade has been a very positive one. On the other hand, the BNP-Jamaat alliance government from 2001-06 didn’t go well with India because of attacks on Hindus and other anti-India activities in the country.
