Central Government to Review Its Stand on Article 35A

The Supreme Court is likely to take up the challenge to Article 35A of the constitution next week in the wake of growing indications that the central government is considering its stand of aloofness from the bid of putting an end to the provision that gives the government of Jammu and Kashmir the rights of conferring special privileges to those whom it defines as the state’s permanent residents.

Post Pulwama also, the centre had sought multiple adjournments of the hearing, yet it is inclined to revisit the issue now. There also indications that the Supreme Court may change its stand of seeking an expeditious hearing.

There are also sources informing that the government is also considering the option of promulgating an ordinance for scrapping this provision that provides an endurance of the special status provided to Jammu and Kashmir through the constitution’s Article 370.
